WhatIWore: You guys! I’m so excited to share my first ever completely self made head to toe outfit! Our beach days have been foggy, but this morning it was a great backdrop for my little chambray play suit and self made hat and espadrille shoes. Pattern details below!

When: March 15, 2016

What:
Hat: Stars and Field (e-mail me to pre-order this style!)
Bra Top: Simplicity 1426, View A
Shorts: Papercut Patterns, ‘Rite of Spring
Shoes: Self Made (see details in this post)

Where: Anna Maria Island Beach

I chose to make a coordinating play suit using a dark chambray fabric and only needed a yard and a half (with enough to spare to make a matching band for my hat). This fabric is so fun to sew with… as were the patterns I used today!

Sometimes I can be so cheap at the fabric store. I waited for ages for this pattern to go on sale, missed it, and then went back and forth paying full (40% off but still expensive) price. In the end I was in a hurry and wanted to make it for this trip so I just bought it.. but I’m glad I did. It was so much fun to sew and went really quickly. I added a little contrasting white piping to coordinate with the shorts. Let me tell you more about those…

I’ve made the shorts once before (seen here) and they’re such a breeze to stitch up. I think next time I’ll want to use a fabric with a little more body because these soft chambray shorts got a little more wrinkled with normal wear than I’d prefer. No matter - they’re still cute!

On the accessory side of things I decided last minute to make myself a larger brim sun hat for this trip. I cut my wire a bit smaller than the natural brim to pull it in and give it a vintage look. I didn’t tack down the chambray band I made so perhaps later this summer I’ll sway with a scarf or another piece of fabric.

And the shoes! The shoes guys! I made shoes!! I’m most proud of these puppies and they’re so comfortable. I actually don’t like sandals at the beach and these kept the sand out nicely. Read more about how I made them (and links to supplies for you to make your own, here)

      Buffalo Check Scarf

WhatIWore: I really can’t get enough of wearing this scarf this season (see other OOTDs here, here and here)! It’s soft and cozy, but what I really love is the traditional buffalo check plaid. I was just thinking today if I could buy up loads of these on clearance at the end of the season, I’d make a bunch of throw pillows to decorate with from December-February (let me know if you spot an amazing deal!)

Every time I go to wear this boots, I make a point of pairing them with something on the conservative side. I’ve played around with skirts and I think it’d work in the evening with an oversized sweater, but not a daytime mommy kind of outfit in my small Midwestern town. Worn here with a longer sweater (for a little more tush coverage) and plaid button down here, I think they look great!

WhatIWore: I feel like most of my wardrobe choices lately have gone in the way of neutrals but on a rainy day like today, I need something merry and bright to cheer me up! This is another sweater I scored at Old Navy when I was working on this post and I just love the colors and the supersized fair isle design. Some day I’m going to attempt to knit my own similar version (most likely in a thicker worsted weight wool) but for now, I’m happy with this cutie.

WhatIWore: I’m so into these dark wine tones lately! I just want to wear shades of plum and purple and maroon, so today I’m sporting a hat I made for Stars + Field with a pretty neutral outfit. Felix and I go to the library on Wednesdays and it’s always hot in there, so I need an easy to remove sweater and comfy pants for crawling after him at story time (today he danced and clapped in the middle of the circle like the little ham that he is. This kid loves to be the center of attention. Who did he inherit that from?!?) I ditched the hat once inside too. And yes, I’m definitely the craziest dressed mom in the room, but it’s just who I am!
