WhatIWore: These photos really capture October to me. Not the warm, bright blue skies contrasting the red and orange leaves, but the gloomy and damp days that tell us winter is getting closer. I’ve been inspired lately by all of the English woolen tweeds I’ve seen in magazines and glad I bought this one in my normal size last year when I was pregnant with Bea (worn here and here). Today I layered it over a vest and pale chambray top and flared dark denim. Very Annie Hall in a way - especially with the hat!

WhatIWore: In my younger days, this is the style of dress I would definitely throw a belt on. It’s a caftan, right? I think it’s a caftan! It’s so hot and humid right now and the thought of anything that’s not loose and breezey (air flow, people!) is not appealing. But this kind of dress just feels right on a day like today! For reference I’m wearing a small!

It’s a relatively dark piece for summer, so I’ve brightened it up with a colorful bag I bought a few vacations ago and a summery bright lipstick. (I wore it earlier this spring with another chambray dress here!)  I haven’t been able to wear any eye makeup for over a week (pink eye, ugh) but I think I might be just about done with it. Hope you’re having a nice week where ever you are!

When: July 21, 2016

What
Shades: Karen Walker
Dress: Old Navy (on sale for under $20!)
Bag: no label, little boutique find
Sandals: gift of Rockport

Where: Appointments, Errands and the coffee shop

See Also: Some cute summer chambray pieces that aren’t your basic shirt dress (all under $40).

What I Wore on Instagram

WhatIWore: Good morning! I hope you had a nice weekend, spending time with your loved ones! Not every American was so lucky after the recent wave of violence and tragedy. I wrote a post about it yesterday and I’d like for you to take the time to read it. We must take action!

It feels a little strange to switch gears and post outfit photos, but as many of you reminded me a few weeks ago, it’s good to go on with our daily lives as we cope with the sadness and anger so many of use are feeling.

It’s been a while since I’ve done my hair or worn makeup. I felt really comfortable with a bare face and air dried hair over the past few weeks, but I also felt really pretty this morning after I got ready!  I thought a skirt would be a nice contrast to the jean shorts I’ve worn for days on end.  This is the sort of thing I’d wear if I worked an office job - it’s pulled together but still has a cool, summery feeling.

When: July 11, 2016

What
Shades: Karen Walker ‘Super Duper’
Top: thrifted
Skirt: Zara, older style (similar in black, or olive)
Belt: Target
Sandals: gift from Clark’s, last summer

Where: Coffee Shop work session

See Also: More ways I’ve worn this navy lace pencil skirt… it’s surprisingly versatile!  A tee shirt, an army jacket, a white blouse or a tied chambray shirt!

Inspired By | Off the Shoulder Ruffles

Off the Shoulder Chambray, How to wear off the shoulder dresses

WhatIWore: I’ve been having a lot of fun trying out some new trends (new to me at least!) and my biggest motivator has actually been dreaming up what I can sew for myself! You saw the bell sleeve eyelet top I designed and made earlier this week and my next easy project is going to be a chambray off the shoulder ruffle top. I love my broad shoulders, especially a little sunkist glow! For home sewers, you can probably whip this up in an evening! I’m not even going to buy a pattern (I figure I can alter my basic bodice, make a giant ruffle with a casing for elastic, hem ‘em and call it a day!)

Although you’re seeing dresses here (which I might end up making if I have enough fabric!) I think simplicity in styling is the way to wear the look. I love how these gals went with neutral shoes and minimal hair/makeup/jewelry for an easy going outfit. Right up my alley!

Not the stitching type? There are a lot of cute options already out there. I really like chambray (big surprise), so that’s what I’ve referenced below (with and without ruffles). Now it’s just about finding the right underpinnings to keep from being uncomfortable (I’m in the market for a new strapless bra, if you have recommendations, I’d love them!)
