What I Wore on What I Wore

WhatIWore: Tell you what guys, I’m feeling so creative and free when getting dressed these days! In most of my outfits these days I aim to do something vintage, something homemade and something I’ve had in my closet but not worn recently. This look is a good example of that! Let’s break it down:

When: February 3, 2016

What:
Shades: Karen Walker
Cape: mikasasucasa on etsy
Sweater: Self Made (pattern info here)
Jeans: Frame Denim (on sale for $92!!)
Scarf: Vintage
Bag: Souvenir from Hong Kong (10 or so years ago!)
Boots: Frye

Where: All dressed to go work at the coffee shop and then my sitter called in sick, so off to the grocery with Felix instead (but not before getting OOTD pics!)

Alright, so following my little formula, the vintage piece is the camel cape I bought from one of my favorite bloggers/vintage dealers on etsy (link above). It took me a while to figure out proportions that I liked and eventually realized a nice flare cut would balance things out (the jeans were purchased last fall). The self made element is the sweater I knit myself. Finally, the scarf and bag are oldies from when I first started doing outfit photos in 2007. I love pulling together all different kinds of pieces this way. Not too vintagey, not entirely new (although, that is a fun treat once or twice a season) and not things I’ve worn so much I’ve grown tired of them. I did a similar color combo last fall HERE

I was just scanning my really old WIW photos and can’t wait to re-invent some of those outfits in the weeks to come. I’ll link up to those when I can!

WhatIWore: In addition to my goal of wearing more of what I already have, I also want to get back into something I really enjoy - the treasure hunt of thrift shopping! There’s a new mega sized Goodwill that opened recently in town so I decided to press my luck to see what I could find.

When: January 21, 2016

What:
Hat: Self Made + Designed (pattern available here)
Coat: J.Crew
Sweater: thrifted, Goodwill
Jeans: J.Crew
Boots: UGG Australia

Where: Coffee Shop to write, edit, blooooooog

Here’s how I normally attack a thrift store. I start with skirts, hoping for vintage pencils or prints. This time I found a really cute denim front slit skirt. I didn’t try on, but figure it’s a cute style I could consign if it doesn’t fit me. Our Goodwill stores are sorted by color, so that’s the next way I narrow things down - usually with black and white blouses. I look for patterns and prints that have a vintage vibe but I actually ended up scoring a lace burn out pattern LOFT tee that looked brand new. I’ll wear that this spring with printed full skirts. Then, as I was en route to my next favorite section - dresses and two piece suits, the sweater I’m wearing today was like “HEYYYYY!!! YOU KNOW YOU WANT ME!!!” Yes, yes I do! I actually recently saw a similarly patterned and colored sweater in one of my old magazine tears, so with that still stuck in my mind, I grabbed this sweater without a second thought. And here I am wearing it today! I love it - especially for the color combo. I normally wash everything thrifted right away, but I just layered this puppy over a long sleeve tee and I’m calling it a day. I’ll probably soak it in my sweater mix and try to block it a little in the near future.

EDIT: My sweater mix is just a soap I use to block my hand knits. It’s called Soak and available here.

In closing - dear thrift shops and vintage stores - I’ve missed you! See you soon. I’m gonna pop some tags, only got $20 in my pocket.  Love, Jessica

What I Wore | Winter Wonderland

WhatIWore:  We finally got our first big snowfall of the season and I love it! Before the streets are plowed or the sidewalks shoveled, it’s so peaceful and beautiful outside. I took Felix on a walk while it was still coming down on Saturday and it was just perfect. Although the spring collections are in full force at the stores, it’s obviously still winter around here, and it’s about time to start getting creative with the same old sweaters I’ve worn all season long.

When: February 22, 2015

What:
Hat: Nordstrom Rack
Shades: Karen Walker ‘Super Duper’
Lipstick: NARS 'Red Lizard’
Scarf: Talbots, gift
Sweater: J.Crew
Jeans: J.Crew
Boots: Hunter

Where: Waffles from Bea’s at Hopscotch

Why: I say this year after year, but for me, color is the way through this last month of winter. Bold lipstick or a scarf or handbag are my go-to spots to add it in.

WhatIWore: Here’s a quick look at what I wore on Sunday morning for a run to the grocery story. We’ve been loving our meals for this year’s edition of the Whole 30 and honestly, it makes me really happy to see a cart full of beautiful, healthy food. Also, our Kroger just got a make over and it’s insane! They were frying up hot donuts! They have a rotating sushi bar! I treated myself to a green juice instead but I will no doubt give into temptations down the road!

When: January 11, 2015

What
Hat:: Nordstrom Rack
Shades: Karen Walker
Chambray: J.Crew Factory (similar)
Sweater: Tracy Reese
Jeans: J.Crew
Booties: Rag + Bone

Where: Weekend errands

Why: I’m into sweaters so much more this year than ever before. This faded neon version is from a couple years ago and one of the brighter pieces in my current closet. I’ve been resorting to the same muted palette a lot since Felix came along but I’d like to get more into a colorful groove!
