Houndstooth blazer, glen plaid, Fall blazer, ways to wear a plaid blazer, ways to wear a tweed blazer, annie hall blazer, fall outfit ideas

WhatIWore: Every day for the past week I’ve put this blazer into my online shopping cart, only to get distracted and come back to it the next morning and think about it some more. Today I finally went for it (and got 30% too!)

I’m so excited to wear this! I actually have plans to swap out the buttons for a woven leather style I have in my stash and it’s going to be cute now with a pregnant bump and later this winter once I can fit into my high waisted jeans ago.

I see everything from a vintage tweed ride style look, to a country classic with jeans and a chambray to a very 1970s Annie Hall vibe. These photos capture the inspiration I’ll use when I put it with what I already have. I can imagine it looking amazing with a brooch (a la HRH the Duchess of Cambridge!), with a wool felt hat or all cozy layered over a cream knit turtleneck. Maybe even layered under my vintage camel cape?

This look is all about heritage fabrics - think about quality wool fibers and traditional weaves. I’ve mentioned houndstooth, but any kind of plaid or tweed would work too! If you’re a bargain hunter, get yourself to the thrift shop! Otherwise, I’ve scouted out some ways to get the look below!

WhatIWore: The next few months are my personal favorite for getting dressed. I love layers, sweaters, jeans and boots but its still nice to be able to go bare ankled or push your sleeves up. In short - it’s comfortable! I’ve actually been wearing a version of this outfit a lot over the past week! My mother-in-law gave me the sweater, the jeans are maternity and the boots are new from Clarks, thanks to a gift card from Zappos (thank you!)

Last week I told you guys that I do a lot of online shopping and I think almost all of my shoes were purchased online, which is a little strange considering the fit is so important! I always look for sites that have multiple views (front, side, back, angled, top down) and a good return policy just in case (today’s post sponsor, Zappos, has both!!) I like wearing cute things, but I will not suffer for the sake of fashion, especially when it comes to footwear.  After wearing my Clarks sandals almost every day for two summer straight (these guys), I knew this low heeled desert boot would be super comfortable. So far, so good! I also chose a color (Khaki Suede) that I don’t already have in my closet - it’s not quite grey and it’s not carmel or chocolate brown either. Next time I think I’ll pair them with flared jeans, an olive jacket and a fall hat.

WhatIWore: A couple weeks ago, Felix was off to his grandparents house early in the day, so I had some time to kill before Adam and I took a weekend trip to Michigan the following morning. So I thought to myself - why not make a new fall jacket? I have a hunch shearling is going to be popular soon and armed with a 60% off coupon, I hit up the fabric store (I used faux fabric, which was really easy to stitch). The other thing that had me motivated to make something quick is the new season of Project Runway. Every year I consider filling out the 17 page application and trying out, but I fear I can’t sew fast enough or that my pattern making skills aren’t there (in truth, when I’m doing a quick project like this, I prefer to use a pattern, in this case, Burda 6800

I finished the body by the end of the day, but it took me a week to fully complete the jacket. I did the final steps during nap time or with a “helper” (code for Felix sits next to me and I barely get anything done). All in all, I really like how it turned out!!  I omitted facings because the fabric is meant to look good on both sides. I also skipped a closure or any buckles or snaps, which I will definitely use the next time I sew this particular pattern with a less bulky fabric. But hey! It’s done, it’s wearable and it actually feels like fall outside! Win win win!

When: September 27, 2016

What:
Shades: Karen Walker ‘Super Duper’ in crazy tort
Necklace: Madewell
Jacket: Self Made (altered from Burda 6800 base)
Sweater: Self Made (similar here and here)
Jeans: Jeans: AG ‘Stilt’, (non maternity here)
Boots: UGG (similar options here and here)
Bag: Frye (similar color/style)

Where: Coffee Shop

Underneath the faux shearling jacket, I’m wearing another homemade goodie - a Breton striped sweater I knit last year. Here’s the recap post and pattern info or see all of my knitting projects here. The rest of the outfit is pretty simple - my favorite pair of maternity jeans (regular sizes here) with some UGG boots and a Frye bag I bought at the Nordstrom Anniversary sale last year. This outfit makes me wish I had a Yellowstone/Jackson Hole vacation in the works!

Pumpkin Picking (and Apples too!)

It’s become a tradition for our family to get out to the orchard for some apple picking every season. We’ve actually taken Felix to different spots each time and this round we landed at Huber’s in south eastern Indiana. We took a tractor ride out to sample apples under the blazing sun (it didn’t feel like fall at all!) before coming back to the main farm area to check out pumpkins and gourds, have lunch and take some pumpkin ice cream to go (a solid A+ on pumpkin flavor!)

The first year was more about us getting out of the house and on the second year Felix was like “ga ga this is fun” but this year! THIS YEAR! All morning he was talking about the “arm” (farm) and picking “appes” (apples) and “punkins.” He loved the tractors and the baby calf statue and all of the “people!” and “kids!” As his vocabulary explodes he’s become such a clever and chatty little boy. We count our lucky stars to have so much fun as a family.
