Greetings from Florida!! We seemed to escape the winter wonderland just in time for some sunshine down south. One of my favorite things about this trip are the donuts! I generally prefer yeast donuts over the cake variety - unless they’re hot and fresh. This morning Adam and I had a special date with just Felix - we thought he could benefit from some two on one attention - but just as we headed for the door he said “oh no! Please bring baby Beatrix!!” He’s really surprised us with how loving he is of his younger sister!

But back to those donuts!! We get ours from The Donut Experience and I can’t recommend them enough! The actual experience is a little chaotic (especially around 10am when there’s a big rush), but if you come prepared to wait a bit, it’s totally worth it.

Here’s how it works: When you come in you pick up an order sheet and check off what combo of icing and toppings you want on each donut. We went with the house Key Lime (graham cracker and lime drizzle), glaze and rainbow sprinkles, plain chocolate, plain strawberry, caramel and nuts and strawberry with sea salt. You can watch the staff prep each order, and there is a 15-20 minute wait, but NOTHING beats a fresh hot donut in my world! Unless it’s my son enjoying his donut just as much as his mama. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree there!

Have you ever done the create-your-own-flavor donut type thing? What combo do I definitely have to try? Drop me a note on facebook or instagram

If you’re in this neck of the wood, The Donut Experiment is at 210c Pine Ave, Anna Maria, FL 34216 and open 7am-1pm.

WhatIWore: I’m a little sad to admit that feeling like I have nothing to wear has been a running theme the past few weeks (months?) I’m not as inspired by clothes as I used to be, but I’m just letting the phase do it’s thing and hope it will pass. That said, a girl’s still got to get dressed, right? I had bought a new dress yesterday and thought it would be awesome and when I put it on this morning I felt Amish. Not a great look (no offense to Amish style - I thought I wanted to be Amish when I was a little girl. I’ll save that story for another time).

Anyways… here’s another basic outfit. I was actually pleased when I finally arrived at this. And the new sunglasses give it an extra air of cool ($17 at Target) because God knows I need all the cool injections I can get these days (I feel like such a boring mom!) Nothing that a bright bag and pink wall can’t (temporarily?) fix! More outfit details below.

Love is in the Air

Donuts! Valentine's Week, @whatiwore

WhatIWore: Valentine’s Day. Take it or leave it. Some of us savor a time of year to eat extra chocolates or write love notes, yet others feel like it’s been overly commercialized.  No matter which camp you fall into, I think it’s a great time of year to break away from the winter blues by doing little things YOU love for YOURSELF. (Photo Source)

Here are some things I’m planning on doing this week, just because I like them!

  • Add a freshly baked donut to my normal breakfast routine (just one morning!)
  • Or maybe an almond croissant from the bakery across from my campus office?
  • Skip a night in front of the TV and replace with a soak in the tub.
  • Spend an hour or two finally using some of the fancy stationery I’ve bought in the past year to write love notes to my friends and family.
  • Bake a pie! My last one was in November! Maybe cherry chocolate?
  • Eat breakfast for dinner (it’s my favorite meal of the day and I never get sick of it)
  • Browse online for a new spring handbag. It might be too early to take the plunge, but looking never hurts!
  • Work ahead to have time for an afternoon nap, preferably with a tiny Raymond by my side.
  • Buy a few house plants. They’re great at filtering your indoor air and I could use a little green in my life (plus Valentine’s flowers are ridiculously overpriced… hope that doesn’t extend to greenery too?)
  • Most importantly, lots of quality time with my husband, who’s been away for the past week! I miss him like crazy and can’t wait for him to get home this afternoon!

What will you do to treat yourself? Happy Valentine’s everyone!
